The Nikaah takes place under the supervision of the Maulvi. Quranic verses are chanted by the Maulvi and the bride’s father offers the hand of his daughter to the groom. This is followed by the proposal of the groom to the bride. The Maulvi conveys this message to the bride through the ritual of Ijaab. The bride in return provides her consent to the proposal by telling ‘Qubool’. When it is ‘Qubool’ from both the bride and the groom, the Nikaah is said to be over. Once the Ijaab-Qubool ritual is over, the next ritual Mahr starts. This is the wedding gift that the groom gives to his wife. This is a very important ritual in Muslim marriages. Mahr can be in the form of property, gold, cash, movable objects etc. It stands for the commitment and responsibility of the groom towards the bride after marriage. After the Mahr is given, it is time for signing the Nikkahnaama. This is the Muslim Marriage Certificate. Along with the bride and the groom, fathers of the couple have to sign the Nikkahnaama as well.
