FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 - Format Explained

In Today's video, we will review the new format of the amplified tournament that will give us a total of 104 games. QUALIFIED TEAMS a total of 48 teams will qualify for the 2026 tournament, making it the edition with the most teams compared to the 32-team format from previous tournaments. The teams will be divided into 12 groups of 4, from 8 in past tournaments. the top 2 teams of each group will qualify for the round of 32 plus the top 8 third places of the 12 groups. the round of 32, to be used for the first time in the world cup, will be a single direct elimination game that will decide the top 16 advancing to the next round. 8 will advance from the round of 16 to the quarter-finals, followed by the semifinal, third-place match, and final. The tournament will also be the longest, to be played in 40 days in early summer 2026. The host cities will now be 16 across the 3 countries, featuring 3 cities in Mexico, 2 in Canada, and 11 in the United States. The date of the final has been set for July 19th, 2026.
