Opening Supplication 2 I take refuge in you, Lord; let me never be put to shame. Deliver me in your righteousness; 3 turn your ear to me, and come quickly to my aid. Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to which I may be safe, 4 for you are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake, lead me and guide me. 5 Free me from the net they have laid for me, for you are my refuge. 6 Into your hands I commit my spirit; you will redeem me, Lord, my faithful God. 7 I hate those who worship worthless idols, and I trust in the Lord. 8 Your love will be my joy and my delight! When you saw my affliction and knew that my life was in danger, 9 you did not hand me over to the power of the enemy, you set me in a spacious place. Description of the dangers 10 Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in distress: my eyes, my throat, and my stomach are worn out with grief. 11 My life is consumed by sorrow, my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones are wasted away. 12 I am the scorn of all my enemies, and the derision of my neighbors; to my friends I am a source of dread, those who see me in the street flee from me. 13 Like a dead man, I have fallen into oblivion, I have become a worthless thing. 14 I hear the rumors of the people and threats from all sides, as they conspire against me and plot to take my life. An Expression of Trust 15 But I trust in you, Lord, and I say to you: "You are my God, 16 my destiny is in your hands." Deliver me from the power of my enemies and from those who persecute me. 17 Let your face shine upon your servant, save me in your mercy; 18 Lord, let me not be ashamed for having called upon you. Let the wicked be ashamed and go down mute to the Abyss; 19 let lying lips be silenced, those who speak insolently against the righteous with pride and contempt. Thanksgiving for Deliverance 20 How great is your goodness, O Lord! You store it up for those who fear you; and bestow it on those who take refuge in you, in the presence of all. 21 You hide them in the shelter of your presence from the plots of men; you conceal them in your tent, far from quarrelsome tongues. 22 Praise be to the Lord!
