2 skills are most predictive of reading success: letter sound knowledge and phonological awareness (the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in a word). This song provides the perfect opportunity for parents and teachers to help our children develop both in an entertaining and engaging way. This song is aligned with the science of reading and structured literacy. This song includes the letters a-z. Long vowels, consonant digraphs (ch, th, sh), and vowel digraphs (oi, ou, short oo, long oo) are introduced in other videos on my channel. To develop phonological awareness using this song use the pictures on each letter page to play the following games: 1 - Syllabification: Ask your children to find a word with 1 syllable, 2 syllables, or 3 syllables. You can clap the words out together to hear the syllables. 2 - Rhyming: Ask your child to find a word on the page that rhymes with... 3 - Initial Sound recognition: Ask your child to identify the first sound in some of the letters on the page. 4 - Segmenting sounds: Ask your child to tap out each of the sounds they hear in a short word (or longer word if they are getting really good at it). 5 - Blending sounds: Say one of the words on the page like a robot (1 sound at a time) and have your child identify the word you are saying. 6 - Spelling: Starting with only short (3 sound words), regularly spelled words, with sounds your child has already mastered ask your child to tap out the word and then spell it. You can print up the Animated Alphabet playing cards in my Animated Alphabet store on Teachers Pay Teacher to do this with cards if writing is still laborious for your child or if they still need support with their letter sounds.
