Since then, I’ve committed to personal development—and I’ll admit, it’s the most demanding task I’ve ever undertaken. Personal growth is a lifelong journey. Here’s what I learned: What you become is more important than what you get. The key question isn’t “What am I earning?” but “What am I becoming?” Earning and becoming go hand in hand. Who you are determines what you attract. Most of what you have today is a direct result of the person you’ve become. Here’s the fundamental law of life: TO HAVE MORE THAN YOU’VE GOT, BECOME MORE THAN YOU ARE. This is where your focus should lie. Because if you don’t change who you are, you’ll always have what you’ve got. Income seldom outpaces personal growth. Sure, you might get lucky now and then, but unless you grow into the person who can handle it, that luck will evaporate. If someone handed you a million dollars, you’d better become a millionaire in mind and habits—or the money won’t stay long. A wealthy man once said, “If you divided all the money in the world equally, it wouldn’t be long before it was back in the same pockets.” Why? Because it’s hard to hold onto what you didn’t earn through personal development. In my early days, a few things puzzled me. Why did one person earn $2000 a month and another $4000—working the same job, in the same company, for the same number of years, with similar backgrounds? What accounted for the difference? At first, I thought it must be time. “Mary’s got more time,” I told myself. “If I had her time, I’d do better too.” But of course, that’s nonsense. We all get the same 24 hours a day. No one gets more. One man said, “If I had extra time, I’d earn extra money.” I told him, “Forget it. There is no more time. Midnight comes for all of us.” So what can you create if not more time? The answer is: value. You can become more valuable. That’s the secret. Economics 101 says that we get paid for our value—not our time. Sure, we spend time bringing value to the marketplace, but we’re paid for the value we bring in that time, not the hours themselves. Someone says, “I make twenty dollars an hour.” No, you earn twenty dollars for the value of what you do in that hour. Time is just the yardstick.
