What exactly is the subjunctive, and how is it formed? You'll learn this and much more in this video! Hi, this is Tobi from Language Knowledge, and if you're only interested in specific topics, you can see when we'll be covering them here. But first, what exactly is the subjunctive? The subjunctive describes the mood of a verb and is the opposite of the indicative, or the normal form of a verb. It's important to note that there are two forms: the subjunctive I, which is mostly used for indirect speech, and the subjunctive II, which is used to describe something unreal. Now that we know what the subjunctive is, let's take a closer look at its formation. First, the subjunctive I: This is formed using a present tense stem + subjunctive ending. It's important to remember that if the subjunctive is indistinguishable from the infinitive, you must use the subjunctive II. The subjunctive II, on the other hand, is formed using a preterite stem + subjunctive ending. It's also important to note that in the subjunctive II, a, o, and u become ä, ö, and ü. Alternatively, it can be formed using würd + subjunctive ending + infinitive (however, this form is generally not preferred by teachers). Did you understand everything? Great, now you can practice converting the first two sentences below into the subjunctive I and the second two sentences into the subjunctive II. Pause the video now. If you still don't understand, you can either watch the video again from the beginning or look at the following sentences as examples. The sentence: Max says you're not running away. In the subjunctive I, it's: Max said you're not running away. And the sentence: Sabine said Franz is learning too much. In the subjunctive I, it's: Sabine said Franz is learning too much. Furthermore, the sentence: You're calling, you say. In the subjunctive II, it's: You called, you said. Or using "would": You would call me, you said! And finally, the sentence reads: Franz never jumps from the 5-meter diving board, in the subjunctive II: Franz would never jump from the 5-meter diving board!
