Edgar Degas | The Dance Class

Here, I'll tell you about Edgar Degas's dance class 😉 Painting and dance, two aspects that go hand in hand in Degas's work. As if we were peeping through a keyhole, the artist here allows us to capture a moment during a dance class. The teacher marking time with his cane in the painting is one of the most important French dancers and choreographers of the 19th century: Jules Perrot. The teacher we see in the work was once a principal dancer with the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg, where he created beautiful choreographies that have become part of the history of classical dance. The class is in full swing, and Degas captures many details that make it a true snapshot of reality. A group of ballerinas in the background are chatting; some are fixing their hair, some have their arms crossed, some are stretching their legs, and some are tiredly resting their faces on their hands.
