In this lesson, you will learn all about Nouns. • The four types of nouns are common nouns, proper nouns, collective nouns and abstract nouns. (i) A common noun is the name of a person, place, animal or thing in general. Examples: cat, man, woman, writer, star (ii) A proper noun is the name of a specific person, place, animal or thing. Examples: Agatha Christie, Rohan, Godavari, India, The Library of Congress, San Francisco (iii) A collective noun is the name of a group of people, animals or things taken together and spoken of as a whole. Examples: class, team, jury, government, federation (iv) An abstract noun is the name of something that you cannot see or touch, but can only feel or think about. Examples: generosity, curiosity, sacrifice, hospitality, progress, relaxation • Some nouns are countable and some are uncountable. (i) Nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns. We use the articles a and an with singular countable nouns. Examples: a book, one book, two books an egg, one egg, six eggs (ii) Nouns that cannot be counted are called uncountable nouns. Examples: water, sugar, butter, ink, milk • Abstract nouns can be formed from adjectives, common nouns and verbs, with the help of suffixes.
