John O’Malley has been living on Lamphere Street, Brightmoor, Detroit since 1956. His neighborhood has been devastated heavily by the blight. Two houses north and south from his childhood home have been abandoned for years. O’Malley, who was a nurse his whole life, has been battling cancer for 5 years and disabled and now unable to work. He feels forced to carry a weapon in order to protect himself. His neighboring houses have been broken into and squatted by drugdealers in the past. O’Malley and the volunteers from North West Brightmoor Renaissance working in conjunction with Jonathan Pommerville invited White House Artist Ryan Mendoza to make an installation in order to draw attention to the situation. O’Malley and Mendoza recently purchased the house north of John's house. The Detroit City Landbank allowed Mendoza to design the other house south of him. Both houses are painted white with large bullet holes spelling the name of each candidate. Mendoza invites candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to spend one night in the real white house in Brightmoor to show a sign of integrity. Moreover he invites the Detroit City Landbank to demolish the house on O Malley’s left side in the next coming weeks. Many neighbors revealed their concerns that none of the two candidates are actually able to guide or represent their country. O’Malley refuses to leave his home- he wants the city to heal. He is planning to be part of his neighborhood’s comeback. The whole story will be included in Fabia Mendoza’s documentary ‘Coming Home-the White House‘ which first part was presented at the Free Press Filmfestival this year.
