KAMAL HOSSAIN Very few people in the history of this world are accorded the responsibility of writing a constitution. Writing a constitution is a privilege. It allows you to dictate the vision of a nation for years to come. The way millions of Bangladeshis view their country today is derivative of the values instilled by our constitution. Today, it is the basis of the identity of well over 180 million proud, magnificent people. Bangladesh had not even reached a full year by the time the constitution was written, and yet, it bore years of wisdom from the minds of intellectuals who committed to the birth of the republic. As we approach the fiftieth year of our nation, we must start reflecting on our Bangladesh of today. Have we adhered to the principles we promised so many years ago? Is there anything we could have done differently? We do not know the debates and discussions that led to our constitution in those short nine months. Nor do we know about the journey of soul-searching the drafting committee had undertaken in conceiving the spirit of Bangladesh. Perhaps the answers to our question lie in those journeys that our venerated statesmen had taken all those years ago.
