The story of Modern Warfare 3 picks up right after the events of Modern Warfare 2, where Captain Price and Soap MacTavish killed General Shepherd, who betrayed them and orchestrated World War III. They are rescued by Nikolai, an old ally, and taken to a safe house in India. However, Makarov's forces soon attack the safehouse and injure Soap. Price and Yuri, a new playable character who has a history with Makarov, manage to escape with Soap and rendezvous with Nikolai. They then join forces with the Delta Force team Metal led by Sandman, who are sent to stop Makarov from hijacking the Russian president's plane and kidnapping him and his daughter. They fail to rescue the president but manage to save his daughter from Makarov's men in Berlin. Meanwhile, the British SAS team led by Wallcroft are sent to stop a chemical attack in London orchestrated by Makarov. They succeed in preventing the attack but discover that similar attacks have been launched in other major European cities. The war escalates as NATO forces launch a counter-offensive against the Ultranationalists. Price and Yuri infiltrate Makarov's castle in Prague to assassinate him but are betrayed by one of their contacts. They barely escape alive and learn that Makarov has obtained the launch codes for Russia's nuclear arsenal from the president. They then team up with Metal to stop Makarov from launching nuclear missiles at America from a submarine base in Siberia. They manage to destroy the missiles but lose most of their team members in the process. Price then decides to go after Makarov alone with Yuri's help. They track him down to a hotel in Dubai where he is holding a meeting with his inner circle. They crash a hijacked juggernaut suit into the hotel and fight their way to Makarov's penthouse. There, they confront Makarov and learn that Yuri was once an Ultranationalist who helped Makarov with some of his attacks but later turned against him after witnessing the massacre at Zakhaev International Airport. Makarov shoots Yuri and tries to escape in a helicopter but Price jumps onto it and kills the pilot. He then fights brutally with Makarov on top of the crashing helicopter. He manages to strangle Makarov with a steel cable and hang him from the ceiling of the hotel lobby. He then reunites with Yuri, who is still alive but mortally wounded. They share a final moment before Yuri succumbs to his injuries.
