Common Reactions To Trauma │PTSD │How to Help After a Traumatic Event

Common reactions to trauma are important to understand and recognize in yourself and others because they can develop into PTSD. Common reactions to trauma will often lead to no lasting issues, but if left untreated or not addressed, they can develop into mental health conditions such as PTSD, or post traumatic stress disorder. Physician suicide, physician burnout, stress, sleep problems, and difficulty falling asleep can all be addressed in therapy. In times of emergency, Americans have always turned to first line responders to charge into danger, clearing the path to safety. Police, Firefighters, and our Military have been heralded as heroes for putting their lives on the line for our fellow citizens and our country. During this COVID19 health crisis, nurses and doctors have risked their health and well being in a work environment where their patients are fighting for their lives after being exposed to and becoming ill to a deadly virus.   Caring for the sick and dying is not new to our healthcare workers. But the rate at which people are becoming infected and then transgressing to a severe life threatening condition is not only new, but it has never been seen before even by the most seasoned and experienced provider. To date, more than 86,000 of our fellow citizens have lost their lives to this deadly virus.  Witnessing the severity of this illness and being unable to successfully treat and prevent such a high rate of death takes a high emotional and psychological toll on people trained to witness death in a clinical environment.     Nurses and doctors have long been exposed to traumatic events in the clinical setting. But seeing multiple floors and multiple wings converted to Covid patients only is troubling even by extreme standards. Witnessing a patient not respond to aggressive therapy and deteriorate at an advanced rate before your eyes and quickly succumb to death is traumatic. And seeing patients die without any family or loved ones to comfort them in their final moments of life is psychologically troubling. Nurses and doctors have always taken charge to provide death with dignity, but now are also providing death with love and comfort and bridging the gap to families and loved ones so they too can witness remotely and say goodbye.   Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has always existed within our healthcare community. Unfortunately, today it is occurring at a higher rate and at a more severe level. In our Mental Health Minute we explore the signs and actions that our doctor and nurse family members and friends may exhibit to help us identify that they are suffering.   Having a support system at your fingertips can make all the difference.
