What are Unit Fractions? | Decomposing Fractions

Hi Everyone, In this video, we will be learning about unit fractions. Unit Fractions are fraction that have a numerator of 1. For example, one half, one third, one fourth and one fifth are all unit fractions because they all have a numerator of 1. The word decompose means to break fractions into smaller parts. We can take any fraction that has a numerator greater than 1 and break it up into smaller parts. For example, let's take a look at the fraction four fifths. Since our numerator is 4 we know we have a total of 4 out 5 equal parts. We can use a fraction bar to represent each fifth or also a number bond. Our numerator tells us we have four fifths or 4 groups with one fifth in each group. I can represent the fraction four fifths as an equation by using my understanding of unit fractions. Since our numerator is 4, and there are a total of 4 groups of one fifth in our fraction, I can decompose this fraction or break it up into one fifth plus one fifth plus one fifths plus one fifth which is equal to four fifths. I can also combine any of the fractional parts together to create an equation that is equal to four fifths. For example, two fifths plus two fifths will give me four fifths, or I can rewrite the equation as one fifth plus three fifths which is also equal to four fifths. 🎬CHECK OUT MORE OF OUR VIDEOS: Light Rays | Refraction & Reflection: https://loom.ly/u6Untmg Sedimentary Rock Formation: https://loom.ly/oZhYQ3w What is an Ecosystem: https://loom.ly/9eQZfZg Make sure to leave your comments, opinions, and /or recommendation for future videos.
