The Conjuring: Last Rites | Movie Review | Conjuring Series | Spreading Value

The Conjuring: Last Rites has both good and bad points when compared to the earlier films, especially the first two. On the good side, the movie follows the same familiar style the series is known for, with a new family haunted by a new demon. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson once again shine as Ed and Lorraine Warren, giving some of their best performances. The movie has a few strong scares, like a tense mirror scene and an exciting final act. It also gives long-time fans some sense of closure, with emotional moments—especially a touching scene between Lorraine and her daughter Judy. But the film also has some problems. It focuses too much on the Warren family drama, especially Judy’s story, which takes attention away from the haunting. At over two hours long, the movie feels slow and stretched out, unlike the sharp and tight first two films. The new family is not well developed, so it’s hard to really care about them. The movie also doesn’t have the same style and energy as the earlier films, feeling closer to the weaker third part. With too much focus on drama and not enough on scares, The Conjuring: Last Rites fails to reach the same level that made the original films stand out.
