Valiasr Street, formerly known as Pahlavi Street, was built in 1921 in the heart of Tehran. Originally a road connecting the city to Shemiran, it soon transformed into one of the most modern and iconic boulevards of its time with the planting of tall plane trees and the paving of asphalt. Today, stretching nearly 18 kilometers from Tajrish Square in the north to Railway Square in the south, Valiasr is recognized as the longest tree-lined street in the Middle East. The plane trees of Valiasr are more than shade for passersby—they are centuries-old witnesses to Tehran’s social and cultural transformations. From the 18,000 trees planted along the avenue in the early 20th century, about 8,000 remain today, towering as living symbols of resilience and memory. Valiasr is more than just a street; it is the beating heart of Tehran. Parks, cinemas, cafés, and shops line its edges, while the rows of trees weave together a vibrant yet poetic atmosphere—where past and present walk side by side, and each step becomes a journey through the city’s history. This music album, inspired by the Dastgah-e Homayoun—one of the most beloved modes of Persian classical music—and performed in an improvised jazz setting, is a reflection of Valiasr itself: a bridge between old Tehran and the new.
