I'll be showing you how to do public speaking effectively on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Connect with me on Linkedin: Brenden Kumarasamy 1. Clearly understand who you’re trying to help & why you were chosen as the speaker. (0:47) For anything that you do, you must get clear on why it is important that you succeed at any cost whether it’s building a family, asking someone out on a date or getting a job. Public speaking is not an exception to this rule. High performance coach Brendon Burchard calls this raising necessity. The difference between first place and second place is that the person who wins is playing the game for a reason that is so strong that the rest can’t even bother to compete. Think about this YouTube channel, it’s a lot more about me being famous and on getting my Hollywood star or whatever they call it, yeah just kidding, but the reason I show up is because there’s a bunch of people out there who just can’t afford public speaking services, so by doing these videos, my hope is that everyone can share their ideas with the world regardless. This is how to do public speaking effectively. I ask myself why I’m showing up. One of workshops I did was for a young leadership program for girls from an underprivileged community that asked me to speak at their event to motivate, to inspire them and to give them the confidence to share their ideas with the world. But, I go deeper than that. I always ask myself what happens if I decide not to show up? What are the consequences of doing bad here? This is how to do public speaking effectively. 2. Use the puzzle method to speak at a world class level in the shortest amount of time. (2:34) Think of public speaking like a jigsaw puzzle, you know those 1000-piece puzzles that you put together with your family over a campfire or something, my question to you is which pieces would you start with first? Think about it for 2 seconds, if you answered corners, you would be right, corner pieces are a lot easier to tackle than the middle, but we don’t do this in public speaking. We got a presentation due in a couple of days and we start shoving a bunch of content into our pitch, wrong approach, we don’t practice enough, it’s not air tight and when we present, well we stink, because we’re all over the place and not getting people excited to hear us. This is how to do public speaking effectively. How you start and how you finish is so important, and so easy to get right, so what I do is a couple of weeks or months before the actual presentation, I just practice my introduction alone as I’m walking or thinking until it’s perfect. This is how to do public speaking effectively. 3. Build an army of allies to help you conquer the middle pieces. (4:15) Much like a puzzle, you don’t want to do 1000 pieces alone, it’s daunting, you want people in your team to help you, to push you to do better and to achieve more. I’m the same way, even as a professional speaker, I still have my friends give me feedback. I record my presentations, send it to them so they can roast me on every tiny mistake I make so that I can get better. That’s how you really practice like a pro. This is how to do public speaking effectively. I’d recommend at least 5 people to get negative feedback from. The best type of feedback they can give you is on what to remove from your presentation, particularly in the middle, they’ll help you simplify the content, since as you’re presenting, many of them might say, eh well Brenden, what’s all this technical public speaking lingo? I don’t get it, if they don’t get – it’s probably worth replacing or simply removing, and then overtime, your instincts as with any skill just get better.
