Subscribe for more Step 1 Content. Parvovirus B19 is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) in children, characterized by "slapped cheek" rash. It can also cause arthropathy in adults, especially in those with sickle cell disease. In pregnant women, it can lead to hydrops fetalis. Diagnosis is made through PCR testing for viral DNA. Treatment is supportive, as it is a self-limiting illness.
