Week one of the 2022-23 NFL season is officially in the books, as there was no shortage of action to get us through. In the AFC West, the Chargers took the early lead with a win over division rival Las Vegas, but the Chiefs had one of the most impressive results of the week dismantling the Cardinals on the road. Now, arguably the best division in the NFL is back again in week two, this time with a Thursday night matchup that is one of the more intriguing of another busy week. Let’s take a closer look at the action, and how things might play out at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night. Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook: Opening Line: Chiefs -3.5, O/U 54 Current Line: Chiefs -4, O/U 54.5 Last meeting: December 16, 2021, Chiefs 34, Chargers 28 Overview In one of the most sought-after games of the opening week, the Chargers hosted the new-look Raiders in L.A., winning 24-19 in a game they never trailed. On the defensive side of the ball, the secondary shined, intercepting David Carr three times while limiting him to just 295 yards through the air. Despite letting Davante Adams go off for 141 yards and a touchdown, the Chargers corralled the rushing attack to just 64 yards on the day. A large part of that success came around pressuring Carr, as the Chargers finished the day with six sacks netting 39 yards. As for the offense, the Chargers have an emerging superstar on their hands in quarterback Justin Herbert, who threw for three touchdowns and zero interceptions in the first game of the season. The offensive line also is much improved, allowing zero sacks on the day and keeping Herbert protected throughout the afternoon. As for the Chiefs, the 44-21 win over the Cardinals was even bigger than the score indicates, allowing 14 fourth-quarter points largely with their reserves in the game. No Tyreek Hill was no problem for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as he finished with 360 yards and five touchdowns on the day. The defense also got to the Cardinals quarterback, sacking Murray three times for 26 yards and making him uncomfortable throughout the afternoon. Bottom Line The Chiefs got the better of this matchup when they met in late December last year, but I think the Chargers are much improved since then. I’m also not putting as much stock into a Chiefs win against a sinking Cardinals team as I am the performance put on by the Chargers last week against a divisional foe.
