Roopkund Lake, also known as the Skeleton Lake, is a high-altitude glacial lake situated in the Indian Himalayas at an elevation of about 5,029 meters (16,499 feet). The lake is famous for the hundreds of ancient human skeletons found at its edge, which are visible when the snow melts. Discovered in 1942 by a British forest ranger, the skeletons have been a subject of fascination and mystery. Initially, it was believed that the remains were of Japanese soldiers from World War II. However, further studies revealed that the skeletons date back to around the 9th century. Research indicates that the people who died at Roopkund were likely pilgrims or travelers. The cause of death is believed to be a sudden and severe hailstorm, with hailstones as large as cricket balls, which caused fatal injuries. DNA analysis has shown that the skeletons belong to several different groups, including individuals of South Asian ancestry and some with Mediterranean ancestry, suggesting a diverse group of travelers. ___________________________________ The Mystery of the Skeleton Lake: Why Is Roopkund Full of Human Bones?
