The 1973 Yom Kippur War #history #yomkippurwar

Israel In 1973, the country was shut down for the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur. But just across the border, their Arab neighbors, Egypt and Syria, launched a massive coordinated surprise attack to regain territory lost 6 years earlier in the 6-day war. With Soviet weaponry, Egypt crossed the Suez Canal into the Sinai Peninsula while the Syrians assaulted the Golan Heights. Within hours the Israeli military was pushed back on multiple fronts, suffering hundreds of casualties and the destruction of their tanks and aircraft. Initially the military response from Israel was underwhelming, but after a few days their forces were fully mobilized, and after stopping the Egyptian advances, they were ready for a counterattack. In a stunning offensive assault, Israeli forces crossed the Suez Canal and invaded Egypt. They were now threatening the Egyptian capital of Cairo. Meanwhile, in the north, Israel had been able to repulse Syria's invasion and was now threatening their capital, Damascus. However, after 3 weeks of fighting, the U.S., Soviets, and UN intervened to eventually broker a ceasefire. Special Shoutout to my Channel Members: ConversionsTech Theresa Laux Nicolette Galperin
