“As With Gladness Men of Old” is a traditional Epiphany hymn written by William Chatterton Dix (1837–1898) of Bristol, England, composed on January 6 while he was ill and reflecting on the visit of the Magi in Matthew 2. The text was published in Hymns Ancient and Modern in London in 1861. The tune DIX is adapted from a melody by Conrad Kocher (1786–1872), a German church musician from Stuttgart, Germany, originally written in 1838. It was arranged and paired with Dix’s text by William Henry Monk in England, who named the tune in honor of the hymn’s author. Together, text and tune call worshipers to follow the light of Christ and offer themselves in humble devotion to the true King. This is an indie folk rock version of this classic hymn for Epiphany created by Teach Diligently, 2025.
