The album features cover versions of popular Christmas songs and original material written by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff who both produced the album along with Loris Holland. Three official singles were released from the project; ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’, ‘Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)’ and ‘Joy To The World’. ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’, the album’s lead single and one of the three original tracks on the project, went on to become Mariah's biggest international success, topping the charts in countries including Australia, Canada, France, and Germany. In 2019, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, 25 years after its original release, it became Mariah’s 19th number one hit and broke several records, including the longest trip to number one. The following year, it also topped the charts in the United Kingdom for the first time, becoming Mariah's first number one on the UK Singles Chart in 20 years. With estimated sales of over 16 million copies it’s the best-selling Christmas single by a female artist and one of the best-selling singles of all time as well as the best-selling holiday ringtone. ‘Merry Christmas’ peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200, number 1 on the Top Holiday Albums chart and has been certified 8x Platinum with pure sales of over 5.7 million copies in the US.
