US strikes on airport area

(29 Oct 2001) STORYLINE: The US-led air campaign in Afghanistan entered its fourth week on Monday with American warplanes dropping six bombs in the afternoon about three to four kilometers (1-2 miles) behind Taliban lines near Bagram air base. Taliban forces fired anti-aircraft guns, and there were sporadic exchanges of fire between the Islamic militia and forces of the opposition northern alliance. But apart from those bombs the skies over Bagram were reportedly quiet, as were the skies over Kabul, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) to the south. In Changram, in the Panjshir Valley, Northern Alliance forces were testing one of their MI24 Russian helicopters. The Northern Alliance have a small number of the aircraft, captured from the Soviet army who used them to attack the Mujahideen in Afghanistan's rugged mountainous terrain.
