What is anxiety? Anxiety is characterized by an unpleasant feeling marked by a combination of fear, apprehension, and worry, usually followed by physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, and exaggerated reactions. Can it become a problem? Yes, when it impairs the child's daily life, preventing them from enjoying their usual life, the consequences are also reflected in learning and the establishment of social relationships. What are the causes? Abrupt changes in daily life, such as parental separation, death of a loved one, a strong stressful/traumatic situation, loss of contact with someone important and significant. Signs: Crying without explanation. Waking up in the middle of the night frightened. Unexpected reactions to simple, everyday situations. Changes in eating habits. Excessive attachment to one parent. Fears without apparent reason. Outbursts of anger and even violence. Older children may also manifest cardiovascular symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, and a feeling of faintness. What to do when you notice that your child is anxious? Consider whether some behavior of the father or mother is causing this anxiety. Observe what external factor is causing the child's anxiety. Help the child name their feelings. Make the child feel safe and supported. Help your child face situations that trigger anxiety, gradually exposing them to situations and places that generate anxiety, so that they can overcome the difficulties. Seek help from a specialist. This is essential to prevent the child from developing more serious pathologies in the future. How do treatments work? In general, psychological treatments aim to guide parents and children, and provide family interventions to raise family awareness of the disorder, helping to increase the child's autonomy and competence, in order to reinforce their achievements.
