This song is my truth — and it is the heart of The Doris Day Boy. That’s why I needed to share it now. A Secret Love is a new original song from my autobiographical musical The Doris Day Boy — a show inspired by my own journey, told through uplifting anthems, humorous songs, dark and tender moments, and heartfelt duets. I remember vividly one Sunday afternoon when Calamity Jane came on the television for the first time. Doris Day appeared on the screen — radiant, golden, singing Secret Love. It felt as though she was singing just for me, and me alone. This is my version of that song — my way of giving thanks to the woman whose films, voice, and later friendship gave me hope when I thought there was none. As a boy, though, I wasn’t allowed to show that joy. I was forced to sit behind my father so he didn’t have to look at me. Every glance filled him with anger and hatred, so that was my place — hidden. If he saw me enjoying anything on the television, he would turn it off. So I learned to keep everything inside: my joy, my laughter, my hope. A Secret Love is written as a duet between two versions of me: the boy discovering Doris for the first time, and my older self looking back with love and reassurance — telling him, “You’re going to be okay, kid. Keep holding on.” On stage, the song plays out almost like memory unfolding. The boy — me as a child — sings in the present while fleeting visions of my future self are revealed around the stage in shifting pools of light. Each glimpse shows a life shaped by adversity but also by resilience. In those moments, her presence gave me hope in a world where I had none. It ignited a spark in me that life could be different beyond those four walls — I just had to find it. At the end of the song, it returns to the boy sitting alone behind his father, in fear and unseen — but changed forever. Because now he carries hope, and his life will never be the same again. 🎭 The Doris Day Boy is an autobiographical new original musical (in development). It is a story of hope, survival against all the odds and turning those experiences into inspiring others. It explores growing up with abuse, a child silenced before growing up in the care system, bullied and yet alone. Struggles with family relationships, sexuality, body image, identity, surviving cancer and abusive relationships — yet finding hope, courage, and joy through the music and spirit and later friendship of Doris Day. I turned my experience into a lifelong quest to help others reach their full potential and have the courage to dare to dream.
