On Tuesday, April 30, 2013 police responded to an aggravated battery call at the Countryside Village Mobile Home Park at 10960 Beach Boulevard which turned into a standoff with the suspect. The suspect got into an argument with his step father, ambushed him, stabbed him, then barricaded himself inside the home. SWAT was called, police established a perimeter around the trailer and evacuated nearby homes. The suspect came out of the back door screaming and pointed a gun at an officer. Three officers fired their department issued AR-15 rifles, hitting the suspect several times in the chest. The man died at the scene. "This is somebody who was an apparent suicide-by-cop. You had an individual who set out earlier this evening with an ambush attack on one of his family members. He told the officers as he barricaded himself, that he had a gun and then exited the trailer pointing the gun at these officers. Obviously with the attempt to have these officers take his life," Chief Tom Hackney stated. The suspect's step-father was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries and was in stable but critical condition. The three officers who were involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave which is standard protocol at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
