Wii (NSMBW for short) is a platform video game developed by Nintendo, released in Germany on November 20, 2009. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like its predecessor New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, revisits the classic gameplay of the original Super Mario Bros. for the NES, hence the "New" in the title. The storyline in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, as in most "Super Mario" games, revolves around rescuing Princess Peach from a giant, anthropomorphic turtle named Bowser. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Peach is kidnapped by Bowser Jr. and the seven Koopalings, who previously caused trouble in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. To rescue her, Mario travels through eight worlds, each containing approximately eight to ten levels. Each world features a castle and a palace. At the end of each castle or palace level, there is a boss fight. After completing the game once, a ninth world is unlocked. Each world contains a bonus level, which can be accessed if the player collects all the gold Star Coins. These coins can also be used to watch videos in Peach's Castle that provide solutions to difficult situations. The game's core mechanics are classic 2D side-scrolling, but it incorporates 3D elements thanks to its 3D engine. The game is played using the Wii Remote, the Wii's handheld controller. This is held horizontally parallel to the ground, and the directional pad is used to move left and right. The 1 button is used to run, and the 2 button to jump. Shaking the Wii Remote makes the character perform a spin jump. Alternatively, the game can be played using a combination of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. In this configuration, the Z and B buttons replace the 1 button, the A button replaces the 2 button, and the analog stick replaces the directional pad. Motion controls are still handled by the Wii Remote. For the first time, there's also a multiplayer mode that allows up to four players to participate in the story mode simultaneously. This mode features several new elements, such as the ability for one player to carry another, or the ability for a character to enter a bubble when they fall into a hole or are defeated by an enemy. This bubble can be popped by another player to rescue the defeated character. In multiplayer mode, players can choose from the following protagonists: Mario (the first player is automatically Mario), Luigi, and a blue or yellow Toad. Initially, characters like Princess Peach or Wario were considered. However, this would have required unique character physics, such as Princess Peach's gliding flight or Wario's bouncing/farting attacks. The Toads were chosen because they have similar gameplay characteristics to Mario and Luigi, and the developers wanted to offer every player the same experience. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is Nintendo's first game to feature the new Super Guide function. The Super Guide helps the player if they die eight times in a single level. If desired, a computer-controlled Luigi appears and shows the player the way through the level. The player can take over at any point and complete the level themselves. At the end of a level completed by the Super Guide (called Super Assistant in the game), the player can choose whether to save the level or play through it manually. Like the DS version, this game features an inventory, but it's structured differently. Power-ups can no longer be selected from the inventory at random within a level; this must be done on the world map. However, the player can carry an unlimited number of power-ups. These power-ups can be won in minigames against enemies on the world map or in memory games in Mushroom Houses.
