The Game's Not Over

The Game's Not Over

On New Year's Day 1929 the Rose Bowl was being played between Georgia Tech and California Roy Riegels recovered a fumble for California. And in his excitement, he got confused and he began to run in the wrong direction. He was often called since that day "wrong way Riegels" because he ran for 65 yards before he was finally tackled by one of his own players at the two yard line. The goal he intended to be defending California tried to punt way back in their own endzone to kick was blocked. Georgia Tech's scored a safety. The team went to the locker rooms for halftime and after halftime was over. The coach had given a speech he said the starting team is going back on the field for the second half. They left except Roy regels he sat in the corner of the locker room. And the coach walked over to see what was wrong and he said "I can't do it. Coach. I can't play, I've ruined the game for our team." Here's what his coach told him, he said, "Get up Roy the game is only half over. " "You belong on the field. You're part of the team. You belong on the field." Guess what? Our game is not over. We're still here living and breathing. The game's not over. It may be halftime for some of us. For some of us. We may be late in the fourth quarter. Others are just getting started. As long as God leaves us here we have purpose. So we've got to forget the mistakes we've made and move forward.
