The One Who Returned: A Lesson on Faith and Gratitude from the Ten Lepers ‪@coryspathwithjesus‬

In this account from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 17:11–19), we explore a powerful moment during Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. As He traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee, He was met by ten men suffering from leprosy. In biblical times, leprosy was a devastating skin disease that forced individuals into total isolation, cut off from their families and society. Standing at a distance as required by law, these ten men raised their voices in a unified cry of desperation: "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." Jesus did not touch them or heal them instantly on the spot. Instead, He gave them a command that required immediate faith. He told them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." In that culture, a priest was the only one authorized to declare a person ceremonially clean and fit to re-enter society. The miracle occurred not while they stood there, but as they went. It was their obedience to Jesus' word that unlocked the healing. While all ten were cleansed of their physical disease, the story takes a profound turn regarding the condition of their hearts. Only one of the men—a Samaritan, who was considered an outsider by Jewish standards—realized what had happened and turned back. He returned to Jesus, praising God with a loud voice, and fell at Jesus' feet to thank Him. This moment prompted a piercing question from Jesus: "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?" This narrative serves as a timeless reminder that while many seek God's help in times of trouble, true faith is completed through gratitude and glorifying God for His mercy. Scripture Reference (ESV): Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.
