Rosetti (1855) and set to the traditional Irish melody GARTAN. — “Silent Night” has words by Joseph Mohn (1818) and music by Franz Gruber (1818). — “I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light” is written by Kathleen Thomerson (1966). — It is not known who wrote the words to “Away In a Manger.” The beautiful words were set to music by James R. Murray in 1887. — Program Notes for selections from “Angel Band” The collection Angel Band grew out of the co-creators’ love for the tunes and text coming out of the Appalachian Mountains, and the shape-note and early Moravian singing tradition. The opening of this work invited the Angel Band to “bear me away” to “my eternal home,” setting the stage for the unfolding of the story of the Nativity miracle. The text of the mid-19th century shape-note hymn and the 3rd century evening hymn Phos Hilaron are joined with music of American gospel song composer William Bradbury. ’Twas In the Moon of Wintertime is a tribute to North American first nations, including the Cherokee tribe of Appalachia. The text references “Gitchi Manitou,” which means “Great Spirit” in several Algonquian languages, including Wyandot/Huron. The hymn tune LAND OF REST, from the shape-note Sacred Harp hymnal, is joined with the words of Edmund Sears’ It Came upon the Midnight Clear, and announces the Angel’s song of peace and goodwill to a weary world. Londonderry Air is a universally beloved tune originating on County Londonderry, Ireland. Although best known as the tune for Oh Danny Boy, here it is beautifully paired with a new poem by Stephen Bock, The Night that Love was Born. Angels We Have Heard on High is perhaps the best-known English language carol which sings the Angel’s song, Gloria in excelsis Deo. The chorus is loved by singers for its long, cascading melodic sequence. .
