Woe to those who trust in Mount Samaria! You lie on beds of ivory, sprawled on your beds, you eat the rams from the flock and the calves from the stable; you sing to the sound of the harp, you invent musical instruments like David, you drink rich wines, you anoint yourselves with the finest perfumes, and you do not grieve for the disasters of Joseph. That is why they will go into exile, at the head of the captives. The orgy of the dissolute is over. Word of God COMMENTARY ON THE FIRST READING The prophet Amos speaks in the name of the almighty Lord to denounce those who put their trust in riches and have no compassion for the misfortunes of others. PSALM Ps 145:7, 8-9a, 9bc-10 R. Praise the Lord, O my soul. 2ND READING A reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy 6:11-16 Brother, servant of God: Practice justice, religion, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and of which you made a noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. And now, in the presence of God who gives life to the universe and of Christ Jesus who bore witness before Pontius Pilate, I urge you to keep this commandment without stain or reproach until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in due time will show the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, the only possessor of immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. Word of God COMMENTARY ON THE 2ND READING The Apostle Paul urges us to live our Christian life seriously, practicing justice, patience, gentleness, and the commandment of love. GOSPEL A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 16:19-31 Jesus said to the Pharisees: "There was a rich man who dressed in purple and linen and dined sumptuously every day. Now a beggar named Lazarus was lying at the gate, covered with sores, and eager to be fed with the food that was thrown from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came to him and licked his sores. The beggar died, and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died, and they buried him. And being in Hades, in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. He cried out, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame." But Abraham answered him, "Son, remember that you received your good things in life, and Lazarus received evil things; therefore he finds comfort here, and you suffer. And besides, between us and you a great gulf has yawned, so that they cannot cross over from here to you, even if they want to, nor can they pass from there to us." The rich man persisted, "Then I pray you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that by their testimony you may prevent them from coming to this place of torment." Abraham said to him, "They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them." The rich man replied, "No, Father Abraham. But if a dead person were to come to them, they would repent." Abraham said to him, "If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they would not believe even if someone were to rise from the dead." Word of God GOSPEL COMMENTARY Jesus, with the parable of the Rich Man and Poor Lazarus, reminds us of the attitude we should have toward wealth: some are rich in possessions and cling to wealth with all their might, disregarding God and others; others are rich in poverty and cling to God in the hope that He will fill them with the happiness they do not have now and that men are taking away from them.
