What is Itikaf? | Halis Bayancuk Hoca To stay up-to-date on our special posts, which we don't publish on our other social media accounts, you can subscribe to our WhatsApp line by clicking the link; https://bit.ly/2xHiHzN First of all, my brothers and sisters, as you know, Itikaf is a Sunnah. It is the Sunnah of all Muhavwid imams throughout history, starting with our Prophet and Abraham (peace be upon him). Naturally, those who have the most right and deserve to revive this Sunnah today are Muslims, the people of Tawhid and Sunnah. Because whoever accepts someone as their imam, it is naturally primarily upon them to follow him and revive the cornerstones of his life in their own lives. What is Itikaf? The root "akefe" in the Arabic dictionary means confining oneself to a place, being constantly present with something, and living with it constantly and continuously without abandoning it. The Arabs call it "vukuf." So, what is i'tikaf in Sharia? In Sharia, the meaning of i'tikaf is as follows: After making an intention, a person confines himself to a place in one of the mosques and waits there, without leaving it unless necessary and without approaching women. What are the necessary conditions for i'tikaf? Brothers, three conditions are necessary for i'tikaf to be considered i'tikaf according to Sharia. 1. Making an intention. A person who enters i'tikaf must make an intention related to i'tikaf. Why? Because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) says in a hadith: Certainly, actions are determined by intentions, and every person has their own intention. Now, a friend of ours comes and sits here, asking for a conversation. Because his intention is to converse, what is recorded in his record of deeds is converse. Another person intends to spend the same period of time here to draw closer to God, to revive the Prophet's Sunnah, and to practice retreat. God (swt) records the time he spends there as retreat in his record of deeds. Therefore, the intention is essential. Our brothers who enter retreat must enter retreat with the intention. 2. Itikaf must be in the mosque. For God (swt) says in the Holy Quran: “...And do not be with your wives while you are in retreat in the mosques…” (2:187) Therefore, retreat is only possible in the mosque. When our Lord mentioned retreat, He said, “If you are in retreat in the mosques.” 3. During retreat, a person does not have sexual intercourse with women. That is, he does not have sexual intercourse with his wife. This was already mentioned in the verse I just read. These three conditions are necessary for i'tikaf to be considered i'tikaf. Without them, the act of worship would not be called i'tikaf. As for the conditions mentioned in the books of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), almost every one of these conditions is ijtihad, and we see that they are not mandatory according to the authentic sunnah. Why do we practice i'tikaf? i'tikaf is a sunnah revived by the Muhawwid imams before us, and we are reviving this sunnah. Look, after Allah (swt) commanded Abraham (pbuh) and Ismail (pbuh) to build the Kaaba, He says in the verse: "And when We made the House a place of gathering for the people and a place of security. And We said to them, 'Take the Station of Abraham for prayer.'" (We commanded) Abraham and Ishmael, "Purify My House for those who circumambulate, those who remain in retreat, those who bow down (in prayer), and those who prostrate." (2:125) We understand that the Sunnah of retreat existed during the time of Abraham (peace be upon him), and God had His Messenger cleanse His mosque for those in retreat. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) never abandoned this Sunnah during the time of Abraham (peace be upon him). Our mother, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to observe retreat during the last ten days of Ramadan until his death. After that, his wives also observed retreat." In another narration: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to observe retreat during the last ten days of Ramadan until his death, and he would say, 'Seek the Night of Power in the last ten days of Ramadan.'" After the Messenger of Allah, his wives also entered retreat."
