Shubhanshu Shukla Return to Earth LIVE | Axiom 4 Mission | Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), successfully returned to Earth on July 15, 2025, as part of the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, carrying Shukla and three other crew members—Commander Peggy Whitson, Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, and Tibor Kapu of Hungary—splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, California, at approximately 3:01 PM IST (2:31 AM PT). The splashdown marked the end of a historic 18-day mission, during which the crew completed over 300 orbits and traveled nearly 7.6 million miles. The Dragon spacecraft, named "Grace," undocked from the ISS’s Harmony module on July 14, 2025, at around 4:45 PM IST, embarking on a 22.5-hour journey back to Earth. The splashdown was a parachute-assisted water landing, a method favored by NASA for its safety and simplicity, producing a sonic boom during re-entry. Recovery teams retrieved the crew, who then underwent medical checks on a ship before being transported by helicopter to shore for further evaluations and a seven-day rehabilitation period to readjust to Earth’s gravity. Shukla’s mission, originally planned for 14 days but extended to 18, involved conducting seven microgravity experiments, including studies on cyanobacteria, microalgae, and tardigrades, contributing to India’s Gaganyaan program, set for 2027. His journey, costing ISRO approximately ₹550 crore, was a milestone for India’s space ambitions, making him the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 mission. The landing was celebrated as a historic moment, with Union Minister Jitendra Singh and Shukla’s family expressing pride and excitement. The event was streamed live on NASA TV, SpaceX’s YouTube channel, and Axiom Space’s social media.
