Israel attacks gaza 2014 | Israel resumes attacks after Hamas rejects cease-fire plan GAZA CITY — The Israeli military ended a unilateral cease-fire with Hamas on Tuesday and resumed airstrikes in the Gaza Strip after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to escalate Israeli operations there in response to continued rocket attacks from the coastal enclave. "After six hours of unilateral attacks by Hamas, the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has resumed operational activity in the Gaza Strip," the military said in a statement. Authorities later reported the first Israeli fatality in the current conflict. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said an Israeli man in his 30s was delivering food to soldiers Tuesday at the Erez crossing with Gaza when he was struck by a mortar fired from the territory, the Associated Press reported. Rosenfeld said at least 15 Israelis, including several children, have been injured by Palestinian rocket fire since the fighting began a week ago. At least 185 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed and nearly 1,400 injured, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior Israeli official said Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, the IDF chief of general staff, "have instructed the army to operate with full force against the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza." It was not immediately clear what was meant by the instruction to use "full force" against Gaza. The official said the action was precipitated by the refusal of Hamas and another militant group, Islamic Jihad, to accept an Egyptian cease-fire proposal and by the persistent rocket fire. Israel's security cabinet was said to be meeting again Tuesday evening to decide how to proceed in Gaza. Netanyahu has come under pressure from his right flank to launch a ground operation aimed at ending Hamas's reign as the de facto power in the coastal strip.
