Her name is derived from two Sanskrit words: "Shail," meaning mountain, and "Putri," meaning daughter. Therefore, Shailputri literally translates to the "Daughter of the Mountain." She is also known as Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, and is believed to be the rebirth of Sati, Shiva’s first wife. The Story of Maa Shailputri In her previous birth, Goddess Shailputri was Sati, the daughter of King Daksha. Sati married Lord Shiva against the wishes of her father. Daksha, being a powerful king, was displeased with this union and decided to humiliate Lord Shiva by organizing a grand Yajna (sacrifice) and intentionally not inviting Shiva and Sati. Despite being uninvited, Sati insisted on attending the Yajna, hoping to resolve the conflict between her father and husband. However, upon reaching her father's palace, Sati was deeply disrespected. She could not bear the insult toward her beloved husband, Lord Shiva, and in her agony, she self-immolated in the fire of the Yajna. Shiva, enraged by this act, invoked Veerabhadra, a fierce form of his anger, who destroyed the Yajna and killed Daksha. Grief-stricken, Shiva retreated into deep meditation, carrying the body of Sati. To relieve his sorrow, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati's body into 51 pieces, which fell to Earth and became known as the 51 Shakti Peethas, places of great religious significance. In her next incarnation, Sati was born as Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, or the mountain king Himavat, and Queen Maina. This time, she was called Shailputri, or "daughter of the mountain," and she was destined to reunite with Lord Shiva after performing deep penance and devotion. Symbolism and Worship Maa Shailputri is depicted riding a bull, Nandi, holding a trident (Trishul) in one hand and a lotus in the other. Her presence signifies the power of nature and the tranquility that comes from surrendering to divine will. Her worship on the first day of Navratri sets the tone for the spiritual journey of the nine days, which involves purity, devotion, and inner strength. Devotees pray to her for health, prosperity, and spiritual awakening. The first day of Navratri is dedicated to grounding oneself, just as Maa Shailputri represents the strength and stability of the Earth. Her journey from Sati to Shailputri symbolizes the transformation of the soul and the ultimate union with the divine, which is a central theme in the Navratri festival.
