🛕 Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra – A Brief History The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the oldest and most famous Hindu festivals, celebrated annually in Puri, Odisha, dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Krishna), his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. Historical Origins: The festival dates back to ancient times, with references in Padma Purana, Brahma Purana, and Skanda Purana. It is believed to have started in its current form in the 12th century CE, when the Jagannath Temple was built by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. Significance of the Yatra: Once a year, the deities are taken from the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple, around 3 km away, in grandly decorated wooden chariots. This journey symbolizes Krishna’s visit to Vrindavan, and it is the only time the deities come out to give darshan to the public, including those traditionally not allowed in the temple. Chariots: Each deity has their own massive, newly built wooden chariot each year: Jagannath’s chariot – Nandighosa Balabhadra’s chariot – Taladhwaja Subhadra’s chariot – Darpadalana Spiritual Importance: The Rath Yatra is a symbol of equality, unity, and devotion, drawing millions of pilgrims from around the world. It is one of the rare Hindu festivals where non-Hindus and foreigners can witness and even participate in pulling the chariots.
