Crisp, concise and brilliant little lecture by Prince Rama Varma about the complementary aspects of vocal and instrumental music, at the Gana Kala Parishath, Bangalore, in February 2020. Neither rambling nor hurrying through the points, Varma ji struck a perfect balance and covered so much ground in such little time that it left the listeners spell bound, despite Varma ji not trying to impress or to overwhelm. With his profound insights, crystal clear thoughts and deceptively simple words, Varma ji throws light on so many vital aspects of music that provide pointers to all levels of music students, music lovers, music gurus and music practicioners. Some of my lucky friends who had attended this event live, said that they wished Varma ji would just go on for the entire day! Having had the pleasure of listening to Varma ji for several decades, I can vouch for the fact that he needs no props or gimmicks to engage the listener, since he never ever bluffs and has a wonderfully open mind, which is constantly in the learning mode. This lecture is worth listening to again and again if you are a serious student of music.
