Intonation: Speak English Like a Native!

Intonation: Speak English Like a Native!

"Intonation" is the rise and fall of a speaker’s voice when talking. It helps show emotion, ask questions, give commands, or express surprise. For example, in English, your voice usually goes up at the end of a yes/no question, like “Are you coming?” and down at the end of a statement, like “I’m here.” Intonation is important because it helps listeners understand not just what you’re saying, but how you mean it. Without the right intonation, speech can sound flat or confusing, and people might misunderstand your feelings or intentions. Also, if you can master using proper intonation, then you will sound very close to a native English speaker, which is the ultimate goal. Intonation Rules: 1. Rising Intonation (↗️) is used for yes/no questions or to show surprise. 2. Falling Intonation (↘️) is used for statements, commands, and (Wh-) questions. 3. Rising-Falling Intonation (↗️↘️) is used for lists of items or choices between 2 or more things. Also, they are used for polite offerings.
