Why Free Speech Matters

If a government can control speech, it can manipulate information in order to maintain power and suppress dissenting views. A government staying in power might not be the optimal outcome for all of the people who live under that government. 3) Free speech promotes a culture of creativity, risk-taking, and free thinking, rather than censorship and repression and dull conformity as we saw in Mao's China and the USSR. 4) Free speech and the open exchange of ideas can help to solve many real-world problems and enable societies to converge on a solution. 5) Free speech is a basic human right. Allowing free speech is a recognition that people have the right to their own ideas, opinions, and values. Allowing free speech respects human dignity and self-determination and people's right to think for themselves and have open communications with fellow human beings. Here's how the fake categories of hate speech and misinformation can be weaponized against a population: over time, what qualifies as hate speech or misinformation can and will change. In an emergency or crisis (whether real or fake flag), the category of hate speech/misinformation will always be expanded by those in charge to stifle their opposition. This is the last thing that you want during a crisis or during the run-up to a crisis. Instead, what you need is an open public, national dialogue. That's an essential part of democracy. Democracy does not benefit from trying to deplatform or silence people simply because the current regime doesn't like them.
