This is a great sounding beginner microphone that offers great value for money. This is mostly because Røde offers a complete beginner’s package for €189 with all microphone accessories you will need. The second microphone on the list is the MXL 990. Personally, I do not have any experience with this microphone, but I have heard it absolutely delivers as a beginner microphone. As the frequency pick-up ranges for 30Hz to 20.000 Hz, you can capture everything you want. This microphone also is great for acoustic instruments and podcasts. If you are on a very tight budget, go with the Samson C01. This was my first home studio microphone, and it does the job, but it is of less quality than the other microphones in this list. However, with its price of €50 it’s a steal. INTERFACE: If you ask my opinion, Focusrite makes great audio interfaces for example, which don’t require you to sell a kidney. Therefore, I highly recommend the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, which only costs €109. However, before deciding what audio interface you want, read below about DAW’s. DAW: Your Digital Audio Workstation is the software on your computer that you will need to have to record and mix in. For recording, I recommend either Ableton, Cubase or Presonus Studio One. The last one has a cheap version for recording called studio one artist. HOWEVER, some audio interface manufacturers give you a free version of a DAW, which can be super attractive! I bought a Presonus interface once because it came with a free version of Presonus Studio One Artist. The Focusrite Scarlett Solo as described before comes with a light version of Ableton in The Netherlands. This might differ in your country, but definitely worth checking out! STUDIO MONITORS: If you decide that you do want monitors, you should think of the size you need. Don’t overpower your speakers for the room you are in. When you are recording in a room the size of a bedroom, 5″ subwoofers are more than fine. Going bigger might result in your neighbors hating you and you will not be able to drive the speakers the way you want to. On the other side, going bigger means you will have more bass, which results in a more accurate representation of the sound. Personally, I like the KRK Rokit. The price is about €150 each for the 5″ version, beware you will need two of them and also need cables, either a quarter inch jack cable or an XLR-cable, depending on your interface.
