I. Blessed does not mean perfect was not perfect a. Blessing from womb, breasts = good Your momma did a good job raising you! Luke 11.27-28 i. Jesus responds with something better- obedience to the Word of God. b. Jesus downplays the significance of the vessel of His birth. Why? i. But God doesn’t consider every detail important, or we would have record of it! John 20.30-31, 21.25 ii. Jesus being our Savior is important. 1. Him living a perfect example is important… iii. The day of His birth is inconsequential in the light of His perfect sacrifice 1. We must guess even the month of His birth 2. We can almost be certain of His Date of DEATH 3. We know what day of the week on which He was resurrected Matthew 28.1-6 II. Immaculate conception a. The assertion: Mary was born without sin- on that we can agree b. And Born without the ability to be tempted, WRONG James 1.14-15; Romans 3.23 i. The burden of proof is on the side making the assertion of abnormality c. THE PROBLEM: It creates an impossible standard III. Mariolatry a. Mariolatry is a term used, primarily in Protestant polemics, to describe what is perceived as the excessive veneration or literal worship of Mary, the mother of Jesus. b. Deified names: i. Mary, the mother of Jesus John 19.25; Acts 1.14 c. Eternally Virgin: i. [Joke?] As Aunt Esther said (Sanford and Son. S3 E24. 1974) “Pure as the driven snow” ii. She gave birth to four more sons; James, Joseph, Simon, Judas Matthew 13.55-56; Mark 6.3 d. Catholic “Hail Mary,” -prayer i. Quote 6: Hail Mary 1. A major drawback to praying this prayer is that we do not have authority to pray to Mary 2. Secondly; there is no way of knowing if Mary can pray where she currently is 3. Nor do we know anything about the dynamic of prayers said posthumously. ii. Mary has a wonderful testimony 1. Possibly rejected by her family. a. Who is going to believe her story? Pregnancy had never happened like this, EVER. b. Willing to be ridiculed, scorned, and become destitute i. Why? Because that’s what God asked her to do. Luke 1.26-38 Selectively: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph. And the virgin's name was Mary. Gabriel came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you! Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” IV. A Hail Mary a. The simplest way to make sure that your plan is successful is to be winning throughout the entire game. b. Score so many points that the opponent has no chance of success. c. What's wrong with giving your life to God right now? d. “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame but holy lean on Jesus name” The Solid Rock, v1 My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness.
