Around day 7 of a typical 28-day menstrual cycle, only one dominant follicle continues to develop. By day 12, it produces a surge of estrogen that signals the brain’s pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) — the trigger for ovulation. Around day 14, this LH surge causes the follicle to rupture, releasing the egg into the fallopian tube, where it may meet sperm and become fertilized. If fertilization doesn’t happen within 12–24 hours, the egg dissolves naturally, and the uterine lining sheds during menstruation — marking the start of a new cycle.
