PROTO RECORDS - BEST 12'' PLAYLIST:    • PROTO RECORDS ⚡ BEST OF 12'' DEFINITIVE Hi...   Proto Records: 80s Hi-NRG dance label run by Barry Evangeli in Camden, London, UK, which specialised in the gay music scene. The label was active from 1982-1986, and released the early Stock Aitken & Waterman hit productions (Hazell Dean/Divine). Barry Evangeli is a British-Greek Cypriot record producer, who has produced records for such artists as Gloria Gaynor (I Wish You Love CD) and the Divine Record Album Collection. He was the Executive Officer for Proto Records, an independent British record label with guaranteed distribution deals. At the time a young Pete Waterman was based out of the business. In 1984 Proto Records called upon Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Ware, a keyboard player, to write and produce the song "Anna Maria Lena" which would be the entry for Cyprus during the Eurovision Song Contest 1984 in Luxembourg. It was performed by Andy Paul and came in 15th at the event. Mike Stock & Matt Aitken started working together on a track "The Upstroke" (Agents Aren't Aeroplanes) and went to meet Pete Waterman in 1984 at the Proto Offices in Camden. Waterman like the track and concept and gave further input on developing the sound. A month later they recorded the track at Marquee Studios in Soho. Significant as this was the start of Stock, Aitken & Waterman (the most successful music production team of all time) SAW then produced Divine "You Think You're A Man" (UK Position 16 Chart Hit); followed by Hazell Dean "Whatever I Do" (UK Position 4 Chart Hit), and then Dead Or Alive "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) (UK Number 1 Chart Hit) Proto Records at one time had considerable international success with its sole exclusive artist, Hazell Dean and with international cult movie actor / drag artist / singer, DIVINE. In 1986 Proto Records closed its operation.
