On Tuesday, growers gathered in Raleigh to weigh the giant pumpkins. While the top two gourds broke the one-ton mark, a third wasn’t far off. Chris Rodebaugh brought his behemoth of a pumpkin from West Virginia, and weighed in at a whopping 2,206 lbs. The mark set a new state record for the Mountain State. His closest challengers, Terry and Lois Nelson gave him a run for his money, weighing in at 2,197 lbs. 3ed place registered at 1,858 lbs. Each of the top three pumpkins were grown in WV. Mark Rollins of Clyde also placed with his 515.4-pound pumpkin. Donald Murphy of Pink Hill brought the third-largest NC-grown pumpkin, weighing 332 lbs. While the main event was open to growers and pumpkins from other states, the biggest from NC weighed 824 lbs & was grown by Ernie Coley in Ashe County. In addition to seeking out the heaviest pumpkin, competitors also sought to see who could grow the biggest watermelon. Andrew Vial took the crown once again this year, this time weighing in at an impressive lbs. Rodebaugh proved he can grow more than just pumpkins, placing 2ed in the watermelon competition at 242 lbs. “We have some remarkable entries this year, despite the challenges farmers have faced in NC & beyond,” horticulture superintendent April Blazich said. “At times, it’s been too hot, too dry or too wet. But farmers are resilient & fairgoers won’t be disappointed with these entries.” According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest pumpkin ever recorded weighed in at 2,749 lbs at the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in CA last year.
