If you're looking to send messages on Instagram that disappear after being viewed, Vanish Mode is a handy feature you should know about. This video explains how to enable Vanish Mode inside your Instagram chats. When activated, Vanish Mode lets you send temporary messages, photos, or videos that disappear once the chat is closed or after the messages are seen—adding an extra layer of privacy for casual or sensitive conversations. To get started, open the Instagram app and go to the Direct Messages section by tapping the paper airplane or Messenger icon at the top right of your home screen. Next, choose the conversation in which you want to enable Vanish Mode. You can use this feature in both one-on-one and group chats, but the recipient also needs to have an updated version of Instagram for it to work properly. Once inside the chat, simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen and release to activate Vanish Mode. You’ll briefly see a message that says “You turned on vanish mode,” and the screen will switch to a dark theme to indicate it’s active. In this mode, any messages you send will automatically disappear after they’re seen and the chat is exited. If you want to turn off Vanish Mode, just swipe up again and release. The chat will return to normal, and your previous conversation history will reappear if it wasn’t part of Vanish Mode. You can also manage disappearing messages by tapping the username at the top of the chat, then choosing how long messages should remain (such as 24 hours or 7 days).
