He was a former slave from Ethiopia (Habsh) who became a prominent figure in Islamic history. Early Life and Conversion to Islam Hazrat Bilal was born in Mecca around 580 CE. He was a slave of Umayyah ibn Khalaf, a wealthy merchant. Bilal was introduced to Islam by Abu Bakr (RA), who later became the first Caliph. Bilal accepted Islam and became a devoted follower of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Torture and Perseverance As a slave, Bilal faced severe torture and persecution from his master, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, for embracing Islam. Despite the torture, Bilal remained steadfast in his faith, repeating the phrase "Ahad, Ahad" (One, One), affirming the oneness of Allah. Freedom and Service to the Prophet Abu Bakr (RA) eventually bought Bilal's freedom, and he became a devoted companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Bilal served as the Prophet's muezzin (caller to prayer), reciting the Adhan (call to prayer) with his beautiful voice. Contributions and Legacy Hazrat Bilal Habshi (RA) played a significant role in Islamic history: 1. First Muezzin: Bilal was the first person to call the Adhan, marking the beginning of the Islamic prayer tradition. 2. Companion of the Prophet: Bilal accompanied the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in various battles and expeditions. 3. Spreader of Islam: Bilal helped spread Islam in various regions, including Syria and Palestine. Hazrat Bilal Habshi (RA) passed away in 642 CE in Damascus, Syria.
