Gktoday : 11 October 2019 Current Affairs | #Daily Current Affairs | Current Affairs in Hindi - Day 8 CURRENT AFFAIRS – 11th OCTOBER Govt launches GEMINI device ●Government of India launched the GEMINI device that will provide information related to disaster warning to fishermen. ●GEMINI stands for Gagan Enabled Mariner’s Instrument for Navigation and Information. ●It disseminates seamlessly about emergency situations, communication on disaster warnings, potential fishing zones and ocean states forecasts. ●Ocean State Forecast and disaster warnings to fishermen with GAGAN system consisting of 3 satellites- GSAT-8, GSAT-10 and GSAT-15. PFZ forecasts were also inaugurated that provide advisories to fishermen 3 days in advance. World Mental Health Day ●World Mental Health Day is observed across the world every year on October 10. ●Its aim is to raise awareness regarding mental health issues and mobilize efforts to support mental health. ●Theme for 2019 is “Suicide prevention” having objective to attract the government’s attention to the issue so that it is given priority in public agendas across the world. ●According to WHO, almost every 40 seconds, someone loses its life. Hence, WHO launched an awareness campaign called “40 seconds of action” to raise awareness about the large scale suicides. Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme launched ●The ambitious Pradhan Mantri Innovation Learning Programme, DHRUV, kick-started from ISRO in Bengaluru and will conclude on 24th of this month at IIT, Delhi. ●The programme is named after a pole star called DHRUV TARA, launched by HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. ●The main objective of the program is to allow students realize their complete potential and contribute to the society. It covers two areas namely Science and Arts. ●The target of the program is to help the nation achieve the target of 5 trillion Dollar economy. Noble Prize 2019 ●The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in two halves, one half to James Peebles for his theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology and the other half was jointly awarded to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for the discovery of the first exoplanet. ●The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to M Stanley Whittingham, Akira Yoshino and John B Goodenough for their transformational work in the development of fossil-energy free lithium-ion batteries that power everyday products such as smartphones, laptops and even electric vehicles. Researchers discover new antibiotic ●An international team of scientists have discovered a new antibiotic produced by a soil bacterium found in a tropical forest in Mexico — a finding that may help develop new ways to tackle bacterial infections in both plants and humans. ●The antibiotic, known as “phazolicin”, is found in the root nodules of wild beans.
