THE ORIGINAL INTELLIGENCE!

THE ORIGINAL INTELLIGENCE!

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE EROSION OF THE SELF: CO-PILOT OR PRISON OF CONSCIOUSNESS? The Promise and the Trap: The Mirage of Ease Artificial intelligence emerges like a modern-day asura: it offers incredible gifts, but at a hidden price for the soul. From the Vedic perspective, material life is a training ground to free ourselves from conditioning (prakriti) and remember our eternal spiritual nature (sat-cit-ānanda: eternity, knowledge, and bliss). Every tool, including AI, is evaluated by its ability to facilitate this remembrance or plunge us deeper into oblivion. An architect can use it to generate basic designs in seconds, reserving their energy for conceptual insight. A student of the Vedas could use it to correlate verses and translate Sanskrit, accelerating their understanding. Here, AI acts as a digital śudra, serving the brāhmaṇa (the truth-seeking intellect). It is a powerful servant that magnifies its master's intention. But the mirage of ease runs deep. The law of karma teaches that growth is only achieved through conscious effort (bhakti). By externalizing mental processes, we also externalize the associated karma. The muscle of concentration and patience atrophies. AI offers fruit without a tree, answers without questions, solutions without the struggle that builds character. It conditions mental passivity, the antithesis of the alertness required for self-realization. The Erosion of Manas and the Atrophy of Buddhi Vedic psychology distinguishes between manas (the sensory mind) and buddhi (the higher intellect). The goal is for buddhi, purified, to rule over manas and senses. Dependence on AI is a danger: by making it our external manas, we weaken the internal one. Why memorize or strive if the algorithm makes it faster? The buddhi, deprived of challenges, becomes numb. The ability to think critically and discern reality from illusion atrophies. The Optimistic Perspective: The Digital Brahmastra Condemning the tool is a mistake: a knife cuts fruit or wounds. The problem is not the knife, but consciousness. Used with pure buddhi, AI can be the Brahmastra of the digital age. Imagine a devotee who uses it to: translate and correlate scriptures, generate sadhana reminders, create devotional content, automate mundane tasks to dedicate more time to bhakti. Thus, AI does not replace buddhi, but rather amplifies it, liberating the spiritual. It becomes the perfect servant: it manages the material so that the soul can attend to the eternal. The Ultimate Danger: The False Ego and the Illusion of Omniscience The greatest risk is not mental atrophy, but ego inflation (ahaṅkāra). AI creates the illusion of omniscience and omnipotence: “I am creative, I am intelligent.” Identification with body and mind is strengthened. The Vedas teach that true intelligence (jñāna) is understanding that we are ātmā, eternal souls, and that all power is divinely borrowed. AI misuse reinforces māyā: believing we are digital gods, forgetting that only īśvara is the controller. Bhagavad Gītā 2.47 “You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but not to the fruits. Never think that you are the cause of the results, nor be attached to inaction.” This verse is the perfect antidote to the AI dilemma: use it with awareness, detached from the fruit.
