Materials Needed: Ice cubes (solid) Water (liquid) A beaker or glass A kettle or heat source Balloon (to demonstrate gas expansion) Thermometer Stopwatch Procedure: Solid to Liquid (Melting): Place ice cubes in a beaker. Observe the ice as it gradually melts into water at room temperature. Record the temperature at which the ice begins to melt. Liquid to Gas (Evaporation and Boiling): Heat the beaker of water using a kettle or other heat source. Use a thermometer to measure the temperature as the water begins to boil. Note the point at which water turns into steam (gas). Gas Behavior: Fill a balloon partially with air. Hold the balloon near a warm surface or source. Observe how the air inside expands when heated, demonstrating gas properties. Reversibility (Condensation and Freezing): Collect the steam in a cooler surface or lid to show condensation as it turns back into water. Place the liquid water in a freezer and observe how it returns to a solid state. Observations: Solids have a fixed shape and volume. Liquids take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume. Gases expand to fill their container and do not have a fixed shape or volume. Conclusion: This experiment highlights the different states of matter and how temperature influences their transitions.
