The Medieval Skull That Terrified Archaeologists

The Venetian Vampire Skull was discovered in 2006 during excavations of a mass burial site on the island of Lazzaretto Nuovo, near Venice. The skeleton dates to the 16th century, a time when plague outbreaks devastated the city. What made this burial unusual was a large brick deliberately placed inside the skull’s mouth. At the time, some Venetians believed certain corpses could spread illness from beyond the grave, and objects were used to prevent this. Today, the skull is preserved in Venice as a rare example of how fear and folklore shaped burial practices during times of crisis. This video explores the history behind the Venetian skull that still unsettles archaeologists. Subscribe for more! :)
